Traveling This Summer? How to Keep Sleep on Track While You’re Away

July 10, 20252 min read

Summer holidays are full of excitement, new places, later evenings, and plenty of family time. But if you’ve worked hard to get your little one into a good sleep routine, the idea of throwing it all off can be… stressful.

The good news? You can enjoy your trip without completely derailing sleep. It just takes a little planning and a few flexible expectations.

 Before You Go

  1. Plan Travel Around Sleep (If You Can)
Try to travel during naps or early in the day rather than late at night. If that’s not possible, don’t stress, one day of change won’t undo everything.

  2. Pack for Sleep
Bring familiar sleep items: a travel blackout blind, white noise machine or app, their sleeping bag, favourite cuddly toy, and even their usual bedtime book (my travel bag is always loaded with books!). A familiar setup can make all the difference.

 While You’re Away

  1. Stick to Your Routine (Roughly)
Keep the key elements of your usual routine, bath, story, cuddle, even if timings shift a little. Familiar cues help your child feel safe and settled, even in a new space.

  2. Be Flexible With Nap Times
A nap in the pram or car seat is okay while you’re on the go. Try to offer at least one “proper” nap a day in a quiet space if you can, but enjoy the freedom of holiday life too.

  3. Manage Time Zone Changes
If you're traveling across time zones, adjust slowly, by 15–30 minutes per day. Lots of outdoor time during the day will help your child adjust more quickly.

  4. Expect a Few Bumps
It’s totally normal if sleep isn’t perfect while you’re away. Focus on connection and fun – you can get back on track when you’re home.

 When You Get Back

Give your child a few days to readjust. Reinforce the routine, offer extra comfort if needed, and bring bedtime a little earlier for a few nights if they seem overtired. Most children settle back in quickly when home feels calm and consistent again.

Final Thoughts

Sleep and travel can work together. With a few simple strategies and a relaxed mindset, you can enjoy your holiday without undoing all your hard work. And if things feel a little wobbly when you get back, I’m here to help you get back on track.
